Some of us girls just want to eat healthy, while others want to shed a few pounds, a few expect a diet to be part of their daily lifestyle; whichever you are seeking, researchers have placed the mediterranenan diet to the top of their lists. The mediterranean diet has been named the best overall diet of 2020. It focuses on healthy fats, vegetables and whole grains; all part of a healthy eating lifestyle for those who want to maintain their weight or even lose a few pounds.
What we love about this diet is that it is so fresh and nutritious. Sometimes when thinking of diets, we think words like “boring, starving, difficult”. Staying away from fast food drive thrus, and all that heavy carbs actually makes you feel better, rather than bloated.
Essentially you would need to focus on eating less red meat, sugars and saturated fats and adding more fish, green veggies, beans and lots of olive oil. Looking to improve your waist measurements? Give it a try!
1. Olive Oil
Rule number one: always cook your food with olive oil, meaning it’s time to throw that stick of butter out of the fridge. So don’t forget to grab a really large bottle of olive oil on your next trip to the store.Olive oil is the primary source of added fat, so keep drizzling it all over your salads, and proteins.
Nuts help with heart diseases, yes they are high in calories, but a handful a day will do you fine. Hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts, almonds keep these nuts around for easy snacking.
When you enter the store, be sure to focus your eyes on all the greens, such as broccoli, asparagus and spinach. You can eat these beauties until you are satisfied, meaning on this diet you won’t feel deprived if you are eating the right stuff. Raw, baked, boiled, roasted, tossed with all the spices your heart desires!
Eggs, of course, are an amazing source of protein to keep you full during the day. Here’s a little recipe that should keep you satisfied for a few hours. We suggest trying spinach, asparagus omelette and add your preferred spices. Sounds yummy, right?
Have you ever heard of a food where the more you eat of it, the more weight you lose? That’s beans for you, and there are plenty to choose from (black, kidney white, chickpeas). There are abundance of mediteraniean recipes and bean dips to make, that are easy and oh-so- tasty.
I’m sure you have heard blueberries being called a superfood, as they do lower cholesterol and are said to fight cancer. These small berries regulate fat burning, helping reduce abdominal fat. Blueberries are another easy snack food to pack for work, or a long day out.
Salmon is rich in omega 3 fatty acids of the seas, or the-go-to protein in this diet. With the unbelievable amount of different ways to cook it; add it to salads, choose any sides you prefer (but, of course with the diet guidelines). For work, we would try a quinoa salad with salmon slices on top and an excellent lemon dressing.
Quinoa; the seeds that are rich in protein, B vitamins and fiber will be your substitute for rice and another great source of protein.
We have concluded that this is why the Mediterranean Diet is awarded the best overall diet; you are getting all the nutrition needed, not starving yourself, and it’s very effective and well balanced.
